  • Amador Double Barrel 43.4 ABV

Notable Tastes: Vanilla, oak, brown sugar and spice

    Type: Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey

Amador Whiskey Co. Double Barrel marries the best of Kentucky Bourbon with Napa Valley wine barrel finishing. Its journey began in the heart of Bourbon country, with exceptional Kentucky Bourbon that came to life in new charred American oak barrels.

This treasure is then transferred westward along the 38th parallel to California, where it is finished in Napa Valley wine barrels. This double-barrel aging technique creates characteristics from the individual barrels that are then blended together to make exceptional Bourbon, far greater than the sum of its parts.

  • ANGEL’S ENVY CASK STRENGTH 2015 60.5% ABV

Distillery: Louisville Distilling Co, Louisville, KY

Type: Small Batch, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Dark amber in color, Angel’s Envy Cask Strength is significantly darker than the
standard release. It’s clear that the spirit has spent much more time in the port
finishing barrel and it’s taken on some of the dark tones from that barrel. The port finish is also clearly there on the nose which combines the lush port note with oak spice, clove, marzipan, and vanilla. The entry is extraordinarily approachable for a high proof spirit, with soft fruit and vanilla leading the charge with a gradual transition to oak spice in the midpalate. Things do get spicy and slightly fiery towards the end of the midpalate with solid oak, black pepper, and clove stepping out in front of the more lush sweet notes. The spirit does manage to maintain some
balance between the strong spice and the sweet undertones, but that
balance is elusive as the flavors exit quickly in a very dry finish.

  • ANGEL’S ENVY CASK STRENGTH 2016 62.3% ABV

Notable Tastes: Hot, vanilla, and oat

    Distillery: Louisville Distilling Co

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Cask Strength

  • Bakers 53.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: Vanilla, chocolate pudding, nutmeg

Distillery: James Beam Distillery Co. Clermont, KY

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 7 years

Brainchild of Baker Beam, the grandnephew of Jim Beam himself, this bourbon recipe involves a special yeast in the fermentation process that is proprietary to Baker’s. Beam suggests Baker’s is a Bourbon for Cognac enthusiasts. There is lovely sweetness here, plenty of vanilla but also rich chocolate pudding, nutmeg, and fruitcake character.

  • Barrel Bourbon Cask Strength 61.2% ABV

An impeccably balanced spirit rested to maturity for 8 years in new American oak. Aged low in the rick house for a rounder, mellower profile that marries fruit and buttery notes with the spice and comfort of charred oak. Hand churned buttercream and freshly dipped pralines in the nose invite deeper notes of baked peach cobbler and pan toasted chestnuts. The 122.9 proof heat dissipates quickly into savory bursts of brown butter dipped cornbread lathered in stone fruit preserves. Elongated notes of still steaming cinnamon toast lightly dusted with raw sugar. Brightly aromatic tangerine and blood orange beckon with each sip eventually leading to a lengthy caramel coated popcorn finish.

  • Barrel Bourbon Single Barrel 60.8 ABV

Notable Tastes: Flavorful and lush, with oak spice, all spice and cherry as well as cinnamon

    Type: Single Barrel

    Aged: 5

Often, barrels and batches of bourbon are used as components of larger blends. Watered down, pulled too early, left too long, they forgo their singular characteristics. The makers at Barrel Bourbon enjoy finding and identifying barrels that contain distinctive bourbons and then bottling them at cask strength to retain their authentic qualities. Every barrel and every batch they bring will be different.

  • Barrel Raider 42 ABV

Notable Tastes: Spicy and peppery, pipe tobacco nose; endless finish

    Distillery: Batch 206 Distillery

Owing to its high-rye content, Barrel Raider straight bourbon whiskey is spicy and peppery with a pipe tobacco aroma, and it possesses a nearly endless finish.

  • BASIL HAYDEN’S 40% ABV

Notable Tastes: honey, vanilla, gentle smoke, subtle mint

Distillery: Kentucky Springs Distilling Co. Clermont, KY

Type: Small Batch, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 8 years

Basil Hayden’s is famous for being “lighter” in style (though just 80 proof, it’s still in barrels for eight years), and that’s obvious from the first sip. It’s easily drinkable straight, but improves a bit with a splash of water. That’s a difficult trick, actually, because Basil Hayden’s is one of the best widely-available bourbons on the market, if not the best mainstream brand you can buy at any liquor store around.

Where to begin? Start with the smoothness. Hayden goes down gently,
immediately filling your mouth with its sweet honey, vanilla, and gentle smoke character. There’s an interesting mintiness, too — don’t worry, you’ll pick up on it on your second glass.

  • Beanball 50% ABV

Notable Tastes: Nose of cracked corn and caramel which leads to notes of oatmeal, honey and oak on the palate. The finish is filled with more oak, a distinct char and a surprising touch of mint.

    Distillery: Cooperstown Distillery

Aged for at least six years and bottled at 100 proof,

    Distillery: Berkshire Mountain Distillers

    Type: Bourbon Whisky

    Aged: 4 years

Berkshire Mountain Distillers may sound like a solidly English company, but they definitely are not. Situated in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, they produce many different spirits, including Whisky, Rum, Gin and Vodka. Established in 2007, they are well on the way to becoming a very big name in the American Whisky business. This is the first legal distillery to exist in this area since prohibition. The company pride themselves on their artisanal title as well as their support of local agriculture and business.

Berkshire Bourbon is a young Whisky made from corn sourced only two miles away from the distillery. It is aged in new fill American Oak casks and carries the sweetness of the wood from nose to finish.

  • Bib & Tucker 92 ABV

Notable Tastes: Earthy nose with a palate of licorice and cinnamon; pine and grass finish.

Distillery: Sourced (It's rumored to have come from Dickel)

    Type: Tennessee Bourbon

    Aged: 6 years

In the antebellum United States, the term “bib & tucker” was used to describe the finest attire a man owned — the kind of suit or tuxedo that he would wear to a wedding or special event. “Along those lines, we’re putting forth our bib & tucker,” says Harv Gates, the brand ambassador of 35 Maple Street Spirits. “Bib & Tucker is a handcrafted bourbon made with a sense of dedication that can only come when you know you’re making something truly special.”

  • Blanton’s 46.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: caramel, honey, burnt sugar

Distillery: Blanton’s Distilling Co. Frankfort, KY

Type: Single Barrel, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

“The Original Single Barrel Bourbon”. You’ll know it by the little horse and rider on the stopper and the grenade-shaped bottle. How’s it taste? Quite good. An odd 93 proof, the bourbon goes down smoother than you’d think when served neat, but a splash of water brings out the honey, caramel, and burnt sugar notes to an even more obvious level. You’d be fine using Blanton’s as a sipping whiskey or in a mostly-whiskey cocktail like a Manhattan. Just avoid blending it too much with strong aromatics or liqueurs or you’ll lose the delicate character.

  • BOOKER’S About 63% ABV

Notable Tastes: Spice, wood, vanilla, dark chocolate, cinnamon, plums, raisins

Distillery: Kentucky Springs Distilling Co. Clermont, KY

Type: Small Batch, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6-8 Years

Booker’s Bourbon is touted as “the highest grade bourbon made by” master distiller Booker Noe at Jim Beam — hence the name “Booker’s.” Noe died in 2004, but his spirit clearly lives on.
The Bourbon is hot. Though the bottle tag suggests drinking it neat and uncut, this is folly. A healthy splash of water helps Booker’s show beyond the burn. Wood is the primary character here, hefty, chunky, and powerful like a lumberyard. It’s big on the nose and the body, and it takes a good amount of time sipping and savoring for this to fade. Eventually you dig out Booker’s finer nuances. Vanilla and dark chocolate — almost a Mexican chocolate with touches of
cinnamon — which rise up on the finish as you finish your first glass. Some fruitiness here — plums, raisins — is in the mix as well.

  • Boone County 45% ABV

Notable Tastes: Vanilla and Cinnamon with rye

    Distillery: Boone County Distilling Co.

    Type: Straight Bourbon Whisky

    Aged: 10

The finish is unique and complex, ranging from vanilla to a hint of cinnamon and even subtle notes of rye bread. Different people find different things to love. Isn’t that the way it should be? Eighteen 33 is crafted to offer something to every bourbon lover.

One of the greatest values in the worldwide whiskey category.

  • BULLEIT 45% ABV

Notable Tastes: charred oak, rye, caramel

Distillery: The Bulleit Distilling Company . Lawrenceburg, KY

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6+ Years

An honest, old-school, rough-around-the-edges bourbon with a real kick. It’s a 90 proof gut-puncher (crafted from a 175-year-old recipe) that gives off the flavor of its charred oak barrels more than anything else: Bulleit spends six years-plus in those barrels, making it a woody and smoky quaff, but a smooth one if tempered a touch with water.
Bulleit makes for a great blending whiskey with strong mixers like Coke, but it is less exciting when served neat. The smoke is somewhat overpowering, making it hard to pick up much complexity. But if you like that heavy smoke-’n’-oak flavor, this is your concoction.

  • Bulleit 10 Year 45.6% ABV

    Notable Tastes: Vanilla, wood, spices

Distillery: The Bulleit Distilling Company . Lawrenceburg, KY

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 10 years

“Beige label” Bulleit 10 is not particularly dark in color, a classic medium orange/brown. The nose is also not particularly revealing, a classic vanilla and wood character with some spice behind it. The body has more of the same. As you sip, it’s unexpectedly heavy on the wood, but a rack of baker’s spices come along behind that to balance things out for the most part. Overall, it’s a solid whiskey, though it doesn’t come across as particularly old or particularly unique, with the exception of the ample amount of wood throughout, revealing itself especially strongly on the finish.

    Distillery: Grain and Barrel Spirits

    Type: Bourbon Whisky

    Aged: 2

Chicken Cock is a resurrected brand, best known for being smuggled across America in tin cans during Prohibition. Ironically, when the brand was relaunched (with a load of zany flavoured offerings in quick-chill metallic bottles) they themselves became victims of crime as they lost 10,000 bottles to a daring truck heist. Quite different to the bootleggin’ days when it was the authorities intercepting their shipments!

  • Cody Road 45% ABV

Notable Tastes: The raspberry leads, with a wash of grain and grass that goes down light and smooth, returning the vanilla and adding a stick of bubblegum in a moderate finish.

    Distillery: Mississippi River Distilling Co.

Drawn from barrels aged in warehouses constructed over a century ago under Taylor’s watchful eye, the taste is smooth, yet powerful and uncompromising, just like its namesake.

  • Colonel E.H. Taylor Single Barrel 50% ABV

Notable Tastes: oak, plums, butter, citrus

Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, Kentucky

Type: Single Barrel, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Buffalo Trace Distillery releases the second limited edition Bourbon in the Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. collection with a Single Barrel Bourbon. This Bourbon was aged 11 years and 7 months years in Warehouse C, which was built by Col. Taylor in 1881.

Deep Oak, plums, and buttery. The nose contains much the signature oak DNA of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection and other Buffalo Trace Bourbons.
Taste: Enters sweet and buttery, goes to a mild zesty citrus character and the swallow is a prevalence of “smokiness” reminiscent of a Scotch. The acidic nature plays against the smoke in a strange fashion at first, but after more sips becomes an interesting journey.
This kind of smoke is rather unexpected flavor coming out of a Bourbon and delivers the the depth of the barrel in a fashion that we don’t taste often.

  • Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch 50% ABV

Notable Tastes: Tastes of caramel corn sweetness, mingled with butterscotch and licorice. The aftertaste is a soft mouth-feel that turns into subtle spices of pepper and tobacco.

Notable Tastes: vanilla, toasty oak, cherry

Distillery: Corner Creek Distilling Co. Bardstown, KY

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 8 Years

Corner Creek is an artisan bourbon, aged eight years in oak, bottled at 88 proof, and “lightly filtered.” It’s that last part that’s the kicker. Corner Creek has more “flavor” to it than most bourbons. Some of that flavor is good: Strong vanilla, toasty oak wood, cherry fruit. But there’s a real roughness here that you’ll either find charming or overpowering. Charcoal, earthy, and gut-punching char, Corner Creek finishes with a
reminder of whiskey’s days in the saloons and poker tables of the Old West.

    Aged: 17 years

Eagle Rare 17 year-old is one of the five bourbons included in the award-winning Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. This rare bourbon is released in small quantities once a year in the fall.

“This deep, burnished-gold whiskey has a somewhat fragrant nose and the aromas develop an almost wine-like character, with a hint of almonds lurking in the backdrop. The body is big and silky and the palate is far spicier than the nose leads you to believe, but there are also violet notes here, along with a touch of caramel and a hint of old leather. The finish is very leathery and very long.”

  • EAGLE RARE SINGLE BARREL 45% ABV

    Notable Tastes: Caramel, vanilla, cocoa

Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery. Frankfort, KY

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 10 Years

Part of the Buffalo Trace empire, Eagle Rare is a 10 year old Bourbon with plenty to recommend. A classically structured Bourbon, it is sweet without being cloying, and there’s barely a trace of its corn heritage here, most of which you catch on the nose. What remains is an intense dessert-like caramel character, touched with vanilla and cocoa notes, and a long, smooth finish. The balance is just about perfect here: Racy at 90 proof but not too hot. Outstanding value. Can be found for as low as $20 a bottle, which is almost insane for a 10 year old Bourbon.

  • Early Times 40% ABV

Notable Tastes: Vanilla, baking spices, caramel

    Distillery: Brown-Forman Distillery; Shively, Kentucky

    Type: Blended American Whisky

    Aged: Minimum of 3

Early Times Kentucky Whisky is a true American. Created in 1860, Early Times grew up during the early days of the country, when most of America was still country. The name Early Times was chosen as a tribute to the old-fashioned method of making whisky, which included mashing grain in small tubs and distilling the whisky in copper stills over open fires. Today, the process of distilling Early Times is much more exacting, but it still delivers the unmistakable mellow taste that is reminiscent of the original American whisky experience.

  • ELIJAH CRAIG 12 YEAR 47% ABV

Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery Co. Louisville, KY

Type: Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Heaven Hill claims that Elijah Craig was the first small-batch bourbon ever created. Back in the 1700’s a Baptist minister by that name actually invented the process of aging whiskey in charred oak barrels. Today, this super premium small batch bourbon remains one of the finest on the market.

Description: Perfume and clover honey fill the nose. This is deep and rich in structure. Well-integrated elements combine with a high alcohol feel. Still perfumed at the end. Best served neat.

    Distillery: Heavens Hill, Louisville, Kentucky

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Deep amber hue. Opening nosing passes detect a no-nonsense bouquet laced with an astringent oakiness that’s crisp, clean and direct; later sniffings pick up layered scents of corn husk, buttered popcorn, resin, lead pencil and a hint of caramel. Flavor shows fat tastes of old oak, cream, almond butter, bacon fat, vanilla extract and smoke. Aftertaste is warming and semisweet.

  • Elijah Craig 20 Year 45% ABV

Distillery: Heavens Hill Distillery, Louisville, Kentucky

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 20 years

Recently named American Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate, this rarity from Heaven Hill’s Elijah Craig brand has some big expectations to live up to. Distilled and barreled in 1991, it’s been lingering for 20 years before being bottled for your drinking pleasure.
WA‘s praise is hard to argue with. With Elijah Craig 20 Year, you get a Bourbon full of flavor: the typical vanilla, wood oil, peaches, and a distinct raisin character. Plenty of wood here, as you’d expect with a whiskey this old, but it’s balanced by all these other components. Later on, you get more of a fruitcake character from the whiskey, those raisins taking on cinnamon and nutmeg notes, with a candied finish. The wood’s on the nose, the fruit bats clean-up. Lovely lovely lovely.

  • Ezra B 49.5% ABV

Distillery: David Sherman and Luxco, St. Louis, Missouri

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 12 years

Moderately rich and almost on the soft side for a 99 proof bourbon. Seems unmistakenly Heaven Hill to me with that soft HH sweetness, almost like a malt sweetness. The moderate spices are in no hurry across the palate but offer a slow simmer, certainly not a blaze. Carried completely across the palate is a wonderful splash of orange, which even at 99 proof is close to delicate……… very interesting stuff, this bourbon.

Distillery: Four Roses Distillery, Lawrenceburg, Kentucky

Type: Small Batch, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: Blended

Lots of flavor in this Bourbon, starting with a surprising surfeit of fruit. Cherry and peach are on the nose, then big on the palate when you take a sip. Chocolate and cedar wood character come along soon after. The finish is long and lasting, with hints of apple in that chocolate. Think Nutella as a snack after school. Er, after work. The finish has plenty of heat, but even at 115 proof, it’s perfectly drinkable without water, a testament to the depth and power within.

Notable Tastes: spice, rye, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon

Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery Co. Louisville, KY

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 10 Years

Henry McKenna is a value-priced Bourbon from Heaven Hill with serious street cred: Single barrel and bottled in bond (100 proof), it’s aged 10 years and sold to retailers, who pick out their own barrels and sell them direct. This is common with many distilleries, but not at these prices.

It’s a big winner: Scorching hot and dense with spicy rye character, demanding a healthy splash of water to coax out its charms. When you do, they are abundant: Caramel and vanilla in harmony with classic rye charms, with a finish that offers both a cinnamon punch and a soothing sweetness to take you out. It begs for repeat sips and, should you polish off the bottle, well, another one is barely 20 bucks away.

Jefferson’s Reserve Old Rum Cask Finish Bourbon was first aged in new American oak barrels for approximately eight years before being extra-matured in ex-rum barrels from Gosling’s Family Reserve for an additional fifteen months. Gosling’s is a high-caliber rum producer out of Bermuda that is particularly well-known for using ex-bourbon barrels to age their rum! These special barrels give Jefferson’s Reserve Old Rum Cask Finish Bourbon its unique and robust characteristics.

As a result of this unique aging process, the bourbon has an aroma of bananas, vanilla, and almond, leading to a palate of salt, spiced rum, maple, and dried fruits. The long finish leaves the taste of cereal grains lingering on the tongue.

  • Jim Beam – Devil’s Cut 45% ABV

Distillery: James Beam Distilling Co. Clermont, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

The term “Angel’s Share” is a common term to describe the amount of spirit lost to evaporation during the aging process in a barrel. Jim Beam has cleverly coined the term “Devil’s Cut” to describe whiskey which has soaked and become trapped into the barrel and is typically not used in the production of whiskey. This trapped whiskey is what makes bourbon barrels so attractive for use in aging other spirits, like scotch whisky, tequila and rum. For their new Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Bourbon, Jim Beam has extracted this trapped whiskey using a proprietary process with steam and water and then blended that extracted whiskey with some of their regular aged bourbon.

The extracted bourbon carries with it a tremendous amount of tannins and color from the barrel, giving this whisky a deep, dark color. The nose is clearly dominated by strong oak tones with clear cinnamon spice and an undertone of vanilla and caramel. It’s a bold and spicy nose, much more aggressive than the tradition Jim Beam. The entry is very oak forward as the oak notes explode on the palate. Things ease a bit by the mid palate and more of the vanilla and caramel notes find their way from underneath the bold oak. There are some slight cinnamon spice notes present but they do battle with the oak and ultimately get lost. The finish is fairly long and dry with the oak notes really lingering.

After hand-selecting extra-aged bourbons that were aging in the optimal positions of his rickhouse, Noe finished the bourbon in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The sherry casks contributed unique notes of plums, dates, dark fruits and cherries to the bourbon, which complement its subtle touches of dark leather, moist tobacco, chocolate and coffee.

It is rare to find another spirit added to an “extra aged” bourbon for flavoring. If you can find this rare bottle, you’ll taste distinct brandy notes accentuating the whiskey spiciness. The finish is floral from the brandy, oaky from the bourbon, and spicy because it’s Jim Beam.

  • John B Stetson 42% ABV

Notable Tastes: burnt sugar, orange peel, cherries

    Distillery: Vision Wine & Spirits

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Crafted using both rye and wheat in the mashbill (in addition to corn and barley, of course), the whiskey is double distilled in traditional copper pot stills and aged for four years in oak (though no age statement is officially offered). Bottling proof is slightly elevated at 84 proof.
On the nose: Some corn, and a bit of vaporous heat. Underneath, sugar, orange peel, and cherries. There’s also some Irish whiskey-like banana character in the mid-palate, with a corn chip kicker on the finish. Stetson comes across as young Bourbon, but one with a bit of pedigree. Both the rye and wheat character come through, which is quite a delight.

Featherbone Bourbon has a classic vanilla aroma and sweetness with hints of malt, spice and tobacco.

  • K
  • Kinsey 49.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: Kinsey Bourbon is warm and complex on the palate, with notes of honeysuckle, toffee, unripe orange, and grass culminating in a sweet spice finish.

    Distillery: New Liberty Distillery

    Type: Bourbon Whiskey

“When folks think whiskey, they think Tennessee or Kentucky. But the story of American Whiskey began in Pennsylvania, where Kinsey was born in the 19th century. Kinsey is a homage to our original distillery along the Schuylkill River, which once held the world’s largest collection of aging whiskies. This bourbon is made from a 51% corn/49% barley mash bill, aged in new charred American oak barrels, and bottled at 99 proof for robust flavor.” (New Liberty Distillery)

  • Knob Creek 50% ABV

    Notable Tastes: wood, spice, vanilla

Distillery: James Beam Distilling Company. Clermont, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 9 years

Named after Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood home in Kentucky, Knob Creek is truly bourbon at its finest. Created to represent whiskey before it was mass produced, Knob Creek embodies the look, feel and taste of pre-prohibition bourbon. This full-bodied, flavorful bourbon takes classic cocktails to a new level.

    Distinctions
Knob Creek Bourbon, bottled at an honest 100 proof like all good bourbons were a century ago, is aged nine years in wood, giving it the distinction of being aged the longest of the Small Batch Bourbons. This extra aging allows it to absorb more of the sugar in the wood, giving it a slightly sweeter taste and nose.

  • Knob Creek Smoked Maple 45% ABV

  • Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve 60% ABV

Notable Tastes: oak, caramel, molasses, vanilla, spice

Distillery: James Beam Distilling Company. Clermont, Kentucky

Type: Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 9 years

The nose is harsh at a remarkable 60% ABV for a non-uncut/unfiltered (AKA cut/filtered) whiskey. Once past that, it does pretty well with a lot of corn being picked up. A lot of oak here, too.

The taste is surprisingly smooth, and will clear your sinuses right up! Again, be aware that this is a bourbon bottled at 120 proof. The oak is still there and is the most dominating taste in this bourbon.
The finish is long and spicy, leaving your tongue tingling for a bit.

  • Koval 47% ABV

Notable Tastes: Vanilla, grains, and char

    Distillery: Koval Distillery

    Type: Single Barrel Bourbon

KOVAL Distillery’s organic, single barrel bourbon has the requisite mash bill of at least 51% corn, but instead of the usual rye or wheat supplement, they have included one of the main cereals of Asia and Africa. Millet is a gluten-free ancient sustenance grain, and like corn, has a history of working in the spirits industry, albeit in Nepal, where it has long been celebrated as a libation of choice.

Tucked away in a charred new American oak barrel to age, millet and corn learn to complement each other, neither taking the lead. Out of the bottle, this duet opens with notes of mango chutney, while the millet renders a soft whisper of vanilla throughout. Then harmonizing, the grains sing with the sweetness of apricot custard. This pair finishes with peppery caramel, a diminuendo into a wisp of clove-spiked tobacco lingering on the tongue.

Small Batch. Single Barrel. Unfiltered. Heart cut. Organic

  • L
  • Larceny 46% ABV

    Notable Tastes: Spice

    Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

    Aged: 6-12 years

Larceny is the heir to the wheated Bourbons that make up the historic Old Fitzgerald franchise that Heaven Hill acquired in 1999. In fact, it is the somewhat controversial history of John E. Fitzgerald and his eponymous Bourbon brand that provides the story, and name, to Larceny Bourbon.

Larceny Bourbon continues the Old Fitzgerald tradition of using wheat in place of rye as the third or “small” grain in the whiskey’s grain recipe, or mashbill as it is commonly known. The use of winter wheat replaces the spicier, fruitier flavor notes that rye provides with a softer, rounder character that is the hallmark of Old Fitzgerald and other “wheated” Bourbons.

Larceny is a true small batch Bourbon produced from dumps of 100 or fewer barrels that have been selected from Heaven Hill’s open rick warehouses in Nelson County, Kentucky. Larceny is drawn from barrels that have aged from 6 to 12 years at high storage, and is bottled at a full-bodied 92 proof, or 46% alcohol by volume.

Notable Tastes: Oak, toffee, and vanilla

  • Lexington 43% ABV

Notable Tastes: vanilla, sweet corn, spice, rye

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

At 86 proof, Lexington Bourbon combines select grains of rye, malted barley and corn. The rye provides the perfect level of spice, while the malted barley allows the sweetness of the corn to peak through, creating a sensational taste. The resulting flavor boasts deep aromas of the aged oak with a hint of vanilla.

    Distillery: Maker's Mark Distillery

Type: Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon

From the barrel to the bottle at 108 to 114 proof, Maker’s Mark® Cask Strength retains the signature front-of-the-palate flavors of Maker’s Mark® – while amping up the oak, caramel, vanilla and spice to create a remarkable new bourbon.

  • Makers Mark 45% ABV

    Notable Tastes: sugar, vanilla

Distillery: Makers Mark Distillery. Loretto, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6-7 years

Chances are you’re already familiar with Maker’s Mark. After Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam, it’s one of the bestselling American whiskeys. That’s for good reason: Everybody likes Maker’s.

The company’s goal — to create a “soft,” easy-drinking bourbon — succeeds amiably here. There are great aromas of sugar cane and vanilla on the nose, and those are amplified in the body. Can have a bitter finish, but if you add the slightest touch of water, that vanishes completely.

  • Makers Mark 46 47% ABV

    Notable Tastes: sugar, vanilla, cinnamon

Distillery: Makers Mark Distillery. Loretto, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6-7 years

A bourbon that shares Maker’s DNA but has distinctly more woodiness, which gives it a bracing cinnamon character. Not as sweet as Maker’s, which is legendarily heavy on sugary and vanilla character, it runs a tiny bit hotter, too: 94 proof vs. the standard version’s 90 proof.

  • Medley Brothers 51% ABV

    Distillery: Charles Medley Distillery

Notable Tastes: Rich caramel with balanced vanilla, stone fruit notes, smoky depth, with an oak finish

    Distillery: Michter's Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

    Aged: 8 years

Michter’s US 1 Bourbon is made from a carefully selected mashbill that features the highest quality American corn. It is then matured to the peak of perfection, with barrels often aging in excess of eight years. Truly “small batch,” each batch of the US 1 Bourbon is typically composed of no more than two dozen barrels, leaving no margin for “blending out” imperfection and thus necessitating excellence from every barrel. Reflecting the spirit of the Bluegrass State, Michter’s US 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is nuanced, mellow, and earthy.

  • Michter’s Toasted Barrel 45.7% ABV

Notable Tastes: Campfire and cinnamon, with pecan and candied fruit. Lingering finish of baked pears, vanilla, and marshmallow

    Distillery: Michter's Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Introduced to great acclaim in the Fall of 2014, Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is a groundbreaking whiskey expression. It is made by taking Michter’s US 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and then aging it for an additional period in a second custom made barrel. This second barrel is assembled from 18-month air dried wood and then toasted but not charred. The truly unique and delicious taste of Michter’s US 1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon represents a remarkable achievement given that it is Kentucky Straight Bourbon with nothing extra added or done except placement in a second toasted barrel.

  • New Holland Beer Barreled 40% ABV

Notable Tastes: vanilla, chocolate, coffee, toasted marshmallow

Distillery: New Holland Brewery & Distillery. Holland, Michigan

    Aged: 5 years

Beer finished in Bourbon casks: Sure. Bourbon finished in beer casks: Sounds interesting…

Beer Barrel Bourbon (no mashbill provided) is first aged in new oak for “several” years at a relatively low 110-115 proof. It’s then finished for 90 days in barrels that were used for the company’s Dragon’s Milk stout — which, in turn, was itself aged in a former Bourbon barrel. The cycle is endless!

It’s young, corny Bourbon to be sure. The nose is heavy with grain, somewhat hot with smoky campfire notes and — curiously — a toasted marshmallow character at times. There’s continued grain on the palate, but the body has a unique texture to it. New Holland calls it “biscuity” but it’s more like a foaminess or frothiness to me — imagine the head on that pint of stout and you have a sense of it.

As it opens up in the glass, this whiskey begins to burn off some of its grain character and exhibit more of the sweetness we expect from Bourbon. Here it takes on a butterscotch character, with some burnt toast and allspice along for the ride. Really interesting stuff, but it might take you a minute to get over the unique mouthfeel.

Bottled at 90 proof after 10 long years to produce a full bodied nose with notes of vanilla, banana and almonds. Dried fruits, spice and toast on the palate lead to a long sweet finish.

  • Old Forester 1870 45% ABV

Notable Tastes: Baking spices (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg) flow into a citrus-fruit mix and shortbread sweetness

    Distillery: Old Forester Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

In 1870 George Garvin Brown created Old Forester on Louisville, KY’s famous whiskey row. In honor of that milestone year in bourbon history, we have crafted a tribute – Old Forester 1870 Original Batch – the first craft expression in the Old Forester Whiskey Row Series.

Old Forester 1870 Original Batch echoes George Garvin Brown’s original 1870 batching process. Back then, Brown batched barrels obtained from three distilleries to create a consistent flavor profile. To emulate that process today, we also select barrels from three warehouses, each barrel originating from a different day of production, with a different entry proof and a different age profile.

The three expressions of Old Forester are then batched together to craft Old Forester 1870 Original Batch. This 90-proof bourbon will be minimally filtered, to honor the processes available to George Garvin Brown at that time.

  • Old Forester 1897 50% ABV

Notable Tastes: Mouth-filling. Sweet and intense. Deep fruit, spice and oak notes layered over dark caramel and vanilla.

    Distillery: Old Forester Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

This 100 proof expression is the second release in the Old Forester Whiskey Row Series and was specially crafted to honor the U.S. Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. After the U.S. Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 to be labeled as Bottled in Bond, whisky must be the product of one distillation season, one distiller and from one distillery. The concept behind the Act – the idea of “sealed-in quality” – was something that Old Forester – America’s First Bottled Bourbon – introduced in 1870.

  • Old Forester 1920 57.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: Dark caramel coats layers of malt nuttiness and sweet graham cracker all warmed by green peppercorn and coriander spice brightened with a hint of cedar.

    Distillery: Old Forester Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

This 115 proof expression is the third release in the Old Forester Whiskey Row series and celebrates the brand’s continued distillation during Prohibition. For 13 years, the production, transport and sale of alcohol was strictly prohibited. However, Old Forester was granted a permit to continue distilling on Louisville’s Whiskey Row. The 115 proof expression represents a barrel sample that company president Owsley Brown I would have batched at the beginning of Prohibition.

Distillery: Brown-Forman Distillers Company, Louisville, KY

This wonderful bourbon is bottled as close to barrel proof as possible. They add just a splash of Kentucky limestone well-water when they empty the barrels for bottling. Thus, this whiskey is as smooth as any you will find. The more water you add to whiskey from its natural barrel proof to its bottle proof, the harsher it becomes. This 107 barrel proof seems to be just right.

  • Old Weller Antique 53.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: vanilla, honey, fruit, spice

Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, KY

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 7 years

A medium amber bourbon, bearing a sweetish note with some unusual floral notes and a string dash of vanilla. The body is big and the palate is very well balanced, flirting between sweet honeyed fruit notes, a strong vanilla undertone and some sharp spicy tones; the finish is long and spicy.

A very well crafted whiskey. Sip it at room temperature with a little spring water or over ice.

  • Orphan Barrel Barterhouse 20 Year 45.1% ABV

Notable Tastes: Warm biscuits and buttercream, with spice and brown sugar in the finish.

Distillery: Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co.

    Type: Kentucky Bourbon

    Aged: 20

Twenty years in American Oak will make your average spirit a bit mellow. Take all the fight out. Well this here is no ordinary spirit, and twenty years is long enough to pick up a trick or two. For one barrel in particular, it was long enough to develop the gift of a silver tongue. The old Stitzel-Weller rickhouse hands had it written off as a rumor. A character so smooth, it could clean out the card sharps and take the shirt off a travelling salesman’s back.

But the rumors were true. And when the chips are in, a smooth operator can be mighty persuasive indeed. One sip of Barterhouse Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and you just might find yourself forgiving Robert Johnson for trading his soul to the very devil himself.

A pillar of strength rooted in time and wisdom, Forged Oak was found while foraging through the historic Stitzel-Weller rickhouses. This Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey spent 15 contemplative years in charred American white oak barrels.

Forged Oak is a statuesque whiskey with aromas of cedar, maple and vanilla bean that give way to seasoned woody notes of cocoa and young berries, ultimately leading to a long, dry finish of black pepper.

Notable Tastes: Caramel, pear, and fruit cake

Distillery: Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co.

    Type: Kentucky Bourbon

    Aged: 17 years

Never one to be the butt of the joke, THE GIFTED HORSE™ American Whiskey is a bold, outspoken whiskey one shouldn’t look in the mouth. Always racing straight to the punch, we only ask that you politely accept The Gifted Horse for what it is – its own unique offering.

Some time ago at the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery, the unthinkable happened. A batch of beautiful 17-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon was accidently mixed with barrels of much younger whiskey. This error turned out better expected as the older bourbon wasn’t marred, but transformed into something surprisingly special.

Beginning with a nose hinting at apple skin, almond, toffee, raisins and slight milk chocolate, The Gifted Horse has unique tastes of creamy caramel, Bosc pear and fruit cake. This unusual blend’s fruity notes become more apparent with a splash of water.

Lost Prophet is a soft spoken whiskey, with aromas of honey, apricot and clove that reveal a silky, full-bodied taste with notes of spiced vanilla and a touch of leather, culminating in a sweet smoky finish.

Only a small amount of Lost Prophet exists and it will only be released once. After the last bottle has been sold, it’s gone for good, its nomadic journey coming to an end.

    Type: Kentucky Bourbon

    Aged: 26 years

Blustery, boastful, and unapologetic, Old Blowhard Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has been around too long to suffer fools. In the warehouses of mass-production, you might say there isn’t much room for a whiskey full of flavor and big on personality. For 26 years, this well-traveled whiskey has been demanding attention, too bold to play well with others.

A whiskey like this doesn’t come around all that often. Only a very small amount of Old Blowhard exists, and it will only be made available once. After the last bottle of this release has been sold, it’s gone for good, once again to become but myth and legend…

This very rare, limited edition bourbon takes generations of distilling know-how to produce. Only the most careful and expensive distilling method can be used to create a whiskey as special as this one. This is the same distillation as the famous 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve. These barrels were carefully selected from the heart of the warehouse. This whiskey should be enjoyed neat. Any ice or water will dilute the uniqueness.

  • Parker’s Heritage 24YR 50% ABV

Notable Tastes: Oak, leather, and pepper

    Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

    Aged: 24 years

he 2016 edition, the tenth in the series, features two separate versions of the Bottled-in-Bond product, expected to be the oldest Bottled-in-Bond in the world. It was produced in Fall 1990 and Spring 1991 at Heaven Hill’s distillery in Bardstown, KY, (D.S.P. KY-31), which was later destroyed in 1996 by fire along with seven rickhouses and over 90,000 barrels. The liquid is bottled by season in order to retain its Bottled-in-Bond designation.

Bottled at 100 proof (50% abv) and non-chill filtered, the Bourbon will retain more of the natural esters and fatty acids that have matured in the barrel for almost a quarter of a century, providing a richer mouthfeel. Oak flavor is prominent with hints of cinnamon and vanilla, rounded out by a clean finish with a hint of chocolate.

  • Parker’s Heritage Wheat 63% ABV

Simply, this is the Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey with six additional years of aging bottled at cask strength.

    Type: Double Barreled Bourbon Whiskey

A little known fact is, most whiskies are barreled at relatively high proof and cut to bottle proof with water. “Your whiskey has been watered down before you even screw off the cork”, say the folks at Prichard’s. “Can you imagine how this dilutes the flavor?”

Benjamin Prichard’s Double Barreled Bourbon has been cur, then rebarreled in charred oak barrels and aged again. This exclusive process restores and enhances the natural flavors bourbon is so noted for.

  • Ridgemont Reserve 1792 46.85% ABV

Notable Tastes: honey, molasses, brown sugar, nuts, toasted wood

Distillery: Barton Distilling Company. Bardstown, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 8 years

1792 (a reference to the year that Kentucky became a state) comes from the Barton Distilling Company, which ages this small batch whiskey for 8 years before releasing it as a 93.7 proof finished product.

That product is ready-made for any sweet tooth: 1792 is one of the most sugary, dessert-friendly bourbons there is. If they were sipping whiskey like this in the 1700s, it’s a miracle we ever made it through the Industrial Revolution.

That sweetness overwhelms everything: The nose speaks of honey and molasses, the body is brown sugar all the way, more molasses, nuts, and toasted wood character. To call 1792 simplistic would be incorrect: It knows what it wants to be and goes full-tilt for it, right for the throat. There are other bourbons that are more nuanced, complicated, and interesting, but I’d point to 1792 first for the after-dinner crowd.

  • Ridgemont Reserve 1792 Barrel Strength (Full Proof) 62.5% ABV

Notable Tastes: Smok, vanilla, and caramel

Distillery: Barton Distilling Company. Bardstown, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Bourbon insiders have long acknowledged that full proof bourbon has a distinctively rich flavor. This bourbon underwent a distinct filtering process, forgoing the typical chill filtration, and only passing through a plate and frame filter. This allowed the bourbon to maintain a robust proof for bottling, as well as a full rich and bold flavor.

  • Russell’s Reserve 45% ABV

    Notable Tastes: rye, apple, sugar

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distillery. Lawrenceburg, Kentuckey

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 10 years

This is a striking doppelganger to Russell’s appealing Reserve Rye, and the similarities are uncanny. It is very much like a Rye Whiskey, and will please many Rye fans; however, it lacks the sweetness that makes good bourbon so appealing.

At 90 proof, the bourbon is improved with a little water, but still it lacks uniqueness. Part of the Wild Turkey family, it shares some of its DNA with its pappy, also displaying distinct apple notes.

  • Straight Edge

Notable Tastes: Brown sugar, honey, and caramel

    Type: Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 5-8 years

“Straight Edge is a blend of 5, 7 and 8 year old Bourbon from Kentucky and Tennessee. The mash bill is approximately 70% corn with a balance of rye and wheat. The Bourbon was finished at our facility in the Napa Valley where it was aged in high end Napa Valley Cabernet barrels. The barrels imparted toasty vanilla and dried fruit notes while also allowing the Bourbon to soften and mellow. The spirit was aged at 124 proof and then titrated to its bottle strength of 84 proof. The water used was from high in the hills of Alexander Valley at over 2000 feet elevation. This property is rugged, remote and more importantly, the home to three aquifers that pump out pristine, crystal clear, idyllic water. The Bourbon was bottled at our facility in Napa Valley and released to the market in late 2014 with 1,800 6-packs in our initial release.” (The Splinter Group Spirits)

This sweet, full-bodied whiskey has been described by some as “nectar.” The 12 years of aging and medium proof seem to be just right in creating a very pleasant drink of whiskey. This fine bourbon can compete with any excellent cognac as an after-dinner drink. The overall impression is rich and deep.

  • Wild Turkey 101 50.5% ABV

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distilling Co. Lawrenceburg, Kentucky

With Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam, Wild Turkey stands as one of the pinnacles of mass market whiskies. Of course, Wild Turkey has a far more dangerous reputation, owing to its 101 proof status… it’s right there in the name of the product!

Wild Turkey is a surprisingly tame spirit for something with “Wild” in the name. It’s textbook bourbon, with a very light vanilla character and a touch of smoke. Served straight, it’s pure firewater, hard on the palate. With a little water, it’s a little more charming, but there’s no backbone to it, and the spirit comes off as a little thin, with a surprising and strong apple/apple juice flavor.

Wild Turkey 101 is a good complement for fruit-based cocktail recipes, as the apple component works will with other fruit flavors. Or try it in a Manhattan. Extra cherries.

  • Wild Turkey 81 40.5% ABV

    Notable Tastes: caramel, vanilla, corn

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distillery. Lawrenceburg, Kentuckey

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6-8 Years

Well known for their 101 proof bourbon, the folks from Wild Turkey apparently wanted to confuse the hell out consumers even further with another 80-something proof bourbon in their namesake whiskey lineup. Let’s try to get this straightened out. The Wild Turkey Bourbon line has the classic 101. They also have an 80 proof. Did the new Wild Turkey 81 take the place of the 80? Not exactly.

The 80 proof whiskey still exists. The 81 proof bourbon came about because Wild Turkey wanted to offer consumers a bolder, spicier bourbon than the 80 proof, yet one that was not quite as full flavored as the 101. Like Goldilocks it appears they were going for “just right”. In order to accomplish this, 81 is made from barrels between 6-8 years old that have a bolder flavor profile than the original 80.

  • Wild Turkey American Honey 35.5% ABV

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distilling Co. Lawrenceburg, Kentucky

A bourbon must be at least 80 proof in the bottle to be called a bourbon, and it must not be mixed with any flavorings or foreign substances not associated with classic bourbon distilling. However, because its brothers and sisters are bourbons, we put Wild Turkey American Honey in the bourbon category.

At 71 proof, you get an idea going in how much honey is in the blend, and overall it’s a success. The honey isn’t overpowering but you can still get a good taste of it, and it’s not too viscous and sweet, a common complaint with Drambuie.

Mind you, it’s still a honey-sweet experience, though the nose doesn’t really suggest such. There are some flowery herbs (lavender?) in the finish, but it’s a real hunt to find them. There could be all manner of dessert drinks coming out of this spirit, but it was just fine consumed straight… just leave a good gap between your dram and dinner. It really blows out the palate if you’re planning on having something savory later on.

Notable Tastes: oranges, mint, burnt sugar, nuts

Distillery: Wild Turkey Distillng Co. Lawrenceburg, Kentucky

    Aged: A blend of 6, 8, and 12-year stocks.

Rare Breed is a “barrel-proof bourbon,” meaning it is bottled directly from a variety of barrels at the proof it reaches in those barrels, with no added water to lower the proof or dilute the flavor.

This bourbon is a unique marriage of Wild Turkey 6-, 8- and 12-year-old stocks, which give the whiskey a rich, exceptional flavor that is remarkably smooth, considering its high alcohol content. It is assertive with hints of light oranges, mint, and tones of sweet tobacco that will remind you of your grandfather’s pipe-bowl. The finish is long, warm and nutty and lingers in the mouth with hints of hot peppers and well-toasted whole wheat bread.

  • Woodford Reserve 45.20% ABV

    Notable Tastes: almonds, charred oak

Distillery: Woodford Reserve Distillery, in Woodford County, central Kentucky. Formerly known as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery and later the Labrot & Graham Distillery.

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    Aged: 6 years

On the nose: Cigar-boxes and a hint of charcoal. The taste is very firm. Full of flowers, lightly combined. Whole almonds. Marzipan. The finish is very long. Flowery. Violets.
Perhaps encouraged by the dark-orange colour, the descriptors sound sweet, but the overall effect is one of pithy dryness, with great finesse.

  • Woodford Reserve Brandy Cask 45% ABV

Notable Tastes: Toffee-covered dried fruit and toasted hazelnuts warmed by delicate wood spice notes.

    Distillery: Brown-Forman Distillery; Shively, Kentucky

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in Brandy Barrels

    Aged: NAS

The Woodford Reserve Master’s collection Brandy Cask Finish is the latest and 11th release in the series. As the first whiskey to be finished in an American brandy cask, this new expression is yet another product of Woodford Reserve’s continued appreciation and commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.

Brandy, a spirit distilled from wine or fruit, is often aged in oak barrels. These may be used a number of times because Brandy does not have the new, charred barrel requirement that our Kentucky Bourbon does. Finishing fully matured Woodford Reserve in these barrels does not add any new flavors to the whiskey, but instead accentuates Woodford Reserve’s rich dried fruit and nut characteristics that come from our grain recipe and long fermentation process.

1838 Style White Corn was created by adjusting the whiskey’s first source of flavor – grain. The use of white corn instead of traditional yellow corn complements additional grains in the whiskey and allows for a sharper whiskey that’s lighter in body with a softer, sweeter, fruit-forward profile.

  • Woodford Reserve Distillers 45% ABV

  • Woodford Reserve Double Oaked 45.2% ABV

Notable Tastes: wood, oak, vanilla, citrus

Distillery: Woodford Reserve Distillery, Woodford County, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked uses a special finishing barrel. The process is also different. Before being placed into a finishing barrel, Woodford Reserve is proofed back down to 110 proof (the same proof level that it goes into the barrel at the beginning of its agin process) and then put into a special finishing barrel and re-aged for an additional six months to a year (depending on the barrel). The whiskey is then proofed down to 90.4 proof and bottled.

The key to Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is, of course, this second aging barrel. The finishing barrel is made out of new oak and has has had an “extreme toast” which is at least twice as long as the standard toast that Woodford traditionally does with their barrels. The barrel is then flash charred (literally 5 seconds), the lightest char possible. The inspiration for this product came from the Woodford Reserve Master Collection Seasoned Oak Finish and the impact that a different style of finishing barrel could have on a whiskey.

  • Woodford Reserve Four Wood 47.2% ABV

Notable Tastes: chocolate, port wine, black cherry, raisins, sherry

    Distillery: Woodford Reserve Distillery, Kentucky

    Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

As the name implies, Four Wood is a Bourbon with a unique finishing program. Standard Bourbon, finished in newly charred American oak, is finished in one of three different types of barrels: maple, Sherry wood, and Port wood. (Woodford has experimented with maple in a past Master’s Collection.) The three barrel-finished whiskeys are batched together — the ratio is undisclosed, as are the ages of these whiskeys — and bottled as Four Wood.

The nose offers that big wood rush that’s classic Woodford, lots of lumberyard character that masks what you’re about to get into. On the tongue, it’s woody as expected, but surprisingly sweet. Chocolate notes are prevalent, plus lots of fresh red/black fruit — the Port finish overpowers everything with black cherry and raisin notes. Sip this whiskey long enough and orange elements, driven by the sherry finish, come along as well. That’s a good thing, but it does give Four Wood a bit of a fruit salad feeling, with a whole lot going on in the fruit department and not enough spice to back it up.
